How often do we pause to recognize the roots of our nation’s identity? This October, as we observe Indigenous People's Month, we are reminded of the deep cultural wealth Indigenous communities bring to the Philippines. With the theme, “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan” (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge), the spotlight is on not just celebrating their heritage but actively preserving it. This year also marks the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), a law dedicated to securing their rights and giving them a stronger voice in a society that often overlooks them.
Indigenous People's Month is not just a celebration but a call to action. As students, we can contribute by learning about their culture, understanding the issues they face, and becoming advocates for their rights. It’s about ensuring they are part of the nation’s growth while their identity and heritage remain intact. By actively participating and raising awareness, we help create a future where Indigenous communities are not just remembered during commemorations but are genuinely respected and supported all year round. After all, the strength of a nation lies in the diversity of its people and the shared respect for their roots.
