Philippines in the Year of the Snake
Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is one of the biggest celebrations in the world. In 2025, it will be on January 29, marking the Year of the Snake.
In the Philippines, Filipinos celebrate Chinese New Year because of the strong Chinese influence in the country. Many Filipino-Chinese families, or Tsinoys, have been here for generations, bringing traditions like ang pao (red envelopes), dragon dances, and fireworks. Even non-Chinese Filipinos join in because they believe it brings luck and prosperity.
Food is also important. Filipinos love eating tikoy, dumplings, and noodles because they say it brings luck, money, and long life. Many also decorate their homes with red ornaments and lucky charms, just like in Chinese culture.
Since 2012, Chinese New Year is a holiday, declared by former President Benigno Aquino III. He said the celebration shows solidarity with the Chinese-Filipino community, recognizing their contributions and deep connection to Philippine society. Whether Chinese or not, many Filipinos join in, enjoying the food, the traditions, and hoping for a lucky year ahead.
